Summer Highlights: 2014

Hi there! So.....so much for not getting too far behind on my blog. ;) I struggle! But I don't work today, so I am making myself get caught up! Well....a few things have changed since I wrote last. First off: I GOT A JOB! Yay!! I am now working for Old Point National Bank - and LOVE it. It's so much fun to be back in the banking world (and be employed!) I love the branch I work at and the people I work with, so it's pretty much just great all around! (Sooooo much better than my last job!)

Besides that, we have just been enjoying our first summer here in VA and been total beach bums. We have also been doing some sight seeing - so that's always fun! The weekend before I started my new job, we headed over to Shenandoah National Park for a little hiking/camping trip with our good friends, the Blake's! It's about a 2 1/2 hour drive and on the very western part of VA. And there are MOUNTAINS! We were soooooooo beyond excited to see some mountains again! And they are suuuuuper green, so it was gorgeous! Here are some highlights:

Besides that I have just been working and Alex was in school most of the summer. He really enjoyed this last semester because it was more about what you do in certain situation versus why. Obviously the why is important, but he said it was fun to have it been a little more hands on - then just from a book. ;) We did take a little get-a-way break and went up to D.C. for the 4th of July! We figured what better place to celebrate America than at our nation's capital! PLUS my old roommate and good friend, Kelly, was there visiting one of her friends, so we figured we would hit two birds with one stone! We watched the parade and then headed over to the capital grounds to get a good seat for the concert - we waited for probably 5+ hours, but we were in the front row and it was AWESOME. Then we got to watch the fireworks shot off from the Washington Monument. By far the best fireworks I've ever seen in my life. It was so much to be able to go up there and see a good friend from home!

When we weren't spending our time either working or doing school stuff, we were usually always with the missionaries! We had the opportunity to help teach some investigators and be able to be a part of their conversion! It has been such a blessing to be able to work with the Elders in our area, I'm so grateful for missionaries and all of their hard work to share the gospel. We were able to be a part of each of their baptisms and words cannot describe how excited I am that they are now apart of this church. THE CHURCH IS TRUE.

By the end of July Alex OFFICIALLY finished his first year of Physical Therapy School!!!!!!!! HE DID IT! And I couldn't be more proud. He works so hard and is so passionate about his future career. He has had the best grades and I can't wait to see him as a PT - he will be GREAT. The school held a White Coat Ceremony to celebrate them being done with their first year of school - and the transition from classroom to clinical's. Starting in the fall he will only have 8 weeks of class - and then 8 weeks of clinical's. It will basically be like that for the rest of his time in school. I am so beyond excited for Alex and thrilled with his accomplishments. I love you Dr. Jacobs!

And right as Alex finished school - we had some visitors!!! Alex's parents came to see us for about a week and it was so much fun to have them! We did so much while they were here and it was SO nice to be with family again! They got here on Thursday (Alex's last day of school) and we just ate dinner and caught up. Friday we went to Virginia Beach and spent the day boogie boarding and laying out in the sun! We went to dinner on the boardwalk that night and then just walked around the town - it was our first time spending a whole day in VA Beach and it was really fun! There was great food, music and shops, so it was fun to be able to have a fun relaxing day! Saturday was pretty low key - we just hung out around here and then headed to Alex's White Coat Ceremony that afternoon. It was so fun they were able to be here to watch Alex get his white coat! Sunday we went exploring around Historical Jamestown, Williamsburg & Yorktown. It's always fun to be able to be around so much history and be able to share it with family! Monday was another busy day! We left early enough to stop by the beach to watch the sunrise and then headed up to D.C.! We made a pit stop to Great Falls, VA - probably one of my favorite waterfalls up here! Soooo gorgeous! Gayle & Jerry had never been to D.C. before so it was fun to be able to show them around! It was a looooong day of walking, but it was fun to see all the sights! Tuesday was another long, busy day! We went to Shenandoah National Park (the same place we went in June with the Blake's). We spent the day hiking around to different waterfalls and enjoyed nature together! It was such a day fun and such gorgeous sights! It was such a fun trip and I'm SO glad they came out to visit!!!! It was so much fun to have family here and be able to show off VA. Thanks for coming! :)

Alex has a 5 week break before fall semester starts (2nd year!) and so he decided to get a job for a few weeks! He was able to get a lifeguard job and they only needed him until September 1st, which is perfect because he starts school on the 2nd! He works A LOT. About 9-8 every day - including Sundays (bummer...) but it's only for a couple of weeks and it was something for him to do! We were both able to take a little time off of work and go on a little get-a-way for....OUR 3 YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!!

Seriously can't believe it's been 3 years. I remember that day like it was yesterday. We had so much support and it was such a perfect day. I'm grateful that I was able to be sealed to Alex for time and all eternity. It was hard to imagine I could fall even more in love with him, but I have! Especially within the past year. It's been just the two of us here in Virginia and we have really had to cling to each other for a lot of things. I'm so grateful to have him by side and to be able to go through this life together. I love you Alex! August 20, 2011.

We celebrated our anniversary in Outer Banks, NC. It was AH-MAZING! Soooo gorgeous down there! (Plus, it's only a 2 hour drive!) The water was unreal and the waves were huge. We got there Tuesday morning and it just happened to be National Aviation Day! We headed over to the Wright Brother's Memorial, which marks the spot the first time they ever took flight! Everything was free that day - which is always a bonus! And we spent a good portion of the afternoon exploring around there. It was so awesome to see the place where history was made! To the Wright Brothers!!

After that we headed to our hotel (on the beach) to check in and then walked out the door and to the beach! The water was gorgeous! We played around in the water and sun bathed for awhile before heading back to get ready for dinner! We ate at a really good place called Kill Devil Grill. We got freshly caught shrimp and rib-eye steak. Yum! Yum! Later that night we went and got some frozen custard - it was delish!!!!

 Our hotel!

The next day we headed to Bodie Island Lighthouse, which was about a 20 minute drive. It was so gorgeous! I love, love lighthouses!! We didn't end up walking up it, but the view around it was pretty enough for me!

Then we headed back to the beach for more fun in the sun! It was such a great get-a-way and I'm grateful for Alex's preparation on this trip! He had planned everything out before hand so we didn't get there and panic about what to do! Ha. It was trip and I'm so glad we were able to celebrate another fabulous year of marriage. <3

Besides that, life has been pretty much the same around here. Just work, church and getting ready for school! Oh, and today marks one year since we moved to Virginia!! Still can't believe it. It's been a great year and I can't wait to see what the next year in VA brings us!

Goodbye summer, hello to a new school year!
